Driveway Makeover

Several months ago I decided to fix my driveway and the walkway to the front door. It has always bugged me because when it would rain the water would pool and would be a mess if you had visitors or had to take the trash out. Eventually the water would recede but then there would be mud instead.

I wasn’t sure exactly how I was going to resolve the problem so when I started my search it lead me to a place that fixes the concrete instead if replacing it. Not to mention it would be significantly cheaper! The company I worked with is Houston Concrete Raising. They uses a special technique where they drill a quarter size hole through the concrete slab and then push through a hose a concrete mixture that forces the uneven parts to be lifted up. When you see it happen, it looks like magic.  And wow, you can see change instantly too!

Backyard Update

Hey ya’ll! Sorry it has been a while since I last updated. I have been struggling with some technical issues with the blog for the last week. I am so glad they are fixed now so I can share with you a fun update I recently did to my backyard.

My latest update was to add a nice big flower bed right under the windows of my backyard windows. My landscaper was a little bit slow getting it together – it seems everyone has the same idea lately of planting new flowers so it took some time to get him scheduled which meant some of the flowers didn’t survive before they got planted.

The cobblestone was added behind the flower beds to help with drainage.

I really love how the cobble stone looks when wet and my favorite spot aside from the flowers is the spot where the down spout pours into the cobblestone.

So that wraps up this backyard makeover (for now!) I hope to have another backyard makeover to share in the near future.

Latest Crushes – Small Artwork

This week I stumbled across 2 artists that create some amazing artwork that I had to share. The first artist creates beautiful embroidered portraits and vignettes of plants such as below. Her attention to detail is what makes these one of a kind art worth the price tag.

These beautiful waterscapes are hand painted and encapsulated into these glass convex containers. The end result is this illusion that you are looking into tiny ocean within the frame.

Blueberry Almond Bread

2016-03-02-20.08.01-1Today I wanted to share with a new recipe I have been working on – Blueberry Almond Bread. This idea came about after looking online for other breads to make. I usually make a loaf of one of these breads on Sunday and we grab a slice on our way out the door during the week. It is a great alternative to packaged bars but it is also very yummy! Hope you and your family enjoy it as much as we do 🙂

1/2 c. oil
3/4 c. sugar
1/2 cup of milk
2 eggs
1/2 tsp. almond extract
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/4 tsp. baking powder
2 c. flour
1 c. chopped fresh or frozen blueberries
2 TB. almonds (for topping)

In a bowl, combine the oil, sugar, milk, eggs and almond extract. Set aside.

In another bowl, combine the salt, baking powder and flour. Add to the oil mixture, stirring JUST till incorporated.

Fold in the blueberries. Pour batter into a greased 8″ x 4″ loaf pan. Sprinkle with 2 TB. of sliced almonds.

Bake @ 350° for 55-65 minutes, till middle is set (test with a toothpick). Cool 5 minutes in the pan, then take out of pan and place on a wire rack to cool completely.
